For the equivalent of $15 a night, one can rent a gun at theMukuru slum in Nairobi. To break even, the aspiring criminal has to rob someone of at least $15, whichis a week’s salary for the average Kenyan. A sad but winning business model.Come morning, this very same slum is bustling with activity, music andthin-roofed movie theaters. The aspiring and veteran criminals blend in, arefriendly to their neighbors and carry on with their daily duties, waiting forthe sun to set. This is the reality for the majority of the people in Nairobi. If you areheading to Nairobi, going through the slums (inthe morning) will definitely give you a feel for the real Nairobi. Forget the zebras.
